Scientists discover link between stress, anxiety and depression.
According to Spanish newspaper ABC.es "scientists at the University of Western Ontario in Canada have discovered the relationship between stress, anxiety and depression by identifying the connection mechanism in the brain." For its part, the Spanish newspaper ADN.es adds that "The study, published in the online edition of" Nature Neuroscience, also shows a small molecule inhibitor developed by the research team that could provide a new way to treat anxiety, depression and related disorders. "Stephen Ferguson who, with Ana Magalhaes conducted the study, explain: "our discovers suggest that it could exist a new generation of drugs and drug targets selectively directed to depression and hence to more effective treatment."
The found link is explained in ADN.es: "The linking mechanism is the interaction between factor receptor 1 release of corticotrophin (CRFR1) and specific types of serotonin receptors (5-HTRs). No one had connected these two receptors at a molecular level and the study revealed that CRFR1 increases the number of 5-HTRs in the surface of brain cells, which can cause abnormal brain signaling."
Online Magazine of Science, Technology, Society and Culture "Tendencias 21" adds that "to make these findings the scientists used mice and performed a series of molecular experiments",
According to the WHO depression and anxiety are the most common causes of chronic disease in these days.
